The Construction work done value in 2024 reached RM158.8 billion, while in the fourth quarter of 2024 amounted to RM42.0 billion. The value of work done in the Construction sector continued its growth in the fourth quarter of 2024 by recording a notable surge of 23.1 per cent (Q3 2024: 22.9%). The vibrant performance was primarily driven by the buoyant performance of the Special trade activities and Residential buildings sub-sectors, which recorded substantial double-digit increases of 44.9 per cent and 38.9 per cent, respectively. The Non-residential building sub-sector also contributed to the growth by recording 24.6 per cent. In the meantime, the Civil engineering sub-sector remained expanded, albeit at a slower rate, contributing positively with a 9.3 per cent growth rate.
Of the RM42.0 billion in work done value recorded in the fourth quarter of 2024, RM15.6 billion or 37.2 per cent was attributed to the Civil engineering sub-sector, primarily in the Construction of roads and railways (RM6.9 billion) and utility projects (RM6.8 billion). Meanwhile, the value of work done for Non-residential buildings and Residential buildings were RM11.8 billion (28.0%) and RM9.9 billion (23.5%), respectively. The Special trade activities contributed RM4.7 billion (11.3%), largely in Sites preparation (RM1.2 billion); Electrical installation (RM1.1 billion); and Plumbing, heat and air-conditioning installation (RM1.0 billion) activities.
The private sector remained the primary driver of growth in this quarter, contributing RM27.0 billion or 64.2 per cent of the total value of work done. The private sector recorded a notable expansion of 32.9 per cent (Q3 2024: 33.3%), supported by strong performances in the Special trade activities (57.4%) and Residential buildings (38.5%) sub-sectors. In contrast, the public sector, which accounted for 35.8 per cent of share valued at RM15.1 billion, recorded more moderate growth of 8.8 per cent (Q3 2024: 8.1%). The growth was fueled by Residential buildings (46.8%) and Special trade activities (22.4%) sub-sectors, totalling RM0.6 billion and RM1.4 billion, respectively.
Nearly 62.3 per cent of the work done value was concentrated in Selangor, Johor, Wilayah Persekutuan (Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan) and Sarawak. Selangor recorded the highest Construction work done value at RM9.4 billion (22.5%), driven by both Non-residential buildings and Residential buildings at RM2.9 billion, along with Civil engineering sub-sector amounting to RM2.6 billion. Meanwhile, Johor ranked second with RM7.4 billion or 17.7 per cent, mainly bolstered by the Non-residential building sub-sector (RM3.0 billion). In addition, the work done value in Wilayah Persekutuan was RM4.7 billion (11.3%) while Sarawak recorded RM4.6 billion (10.9%).
Summarising the performance of the Construction work done in 2024, the sector reached RM158.8 billion, marking a double-digit growth of 20.2 per cent compared to 8.4 per cent in the previous year. All sub-sectors experienced an uptrend, with notable double-digit increases recorded in Special trade activities (35.9%), Residential buildings (24.5%) and Non-residential buildings (15.5%). Meanwhile, Civil engineering activities maintained steady double-digit growth at 17.3 per cent (Q3 2024: 15.7%). Overall, Malaysia’s construction sector in 2024 demonstrated a solid performance, underpinned by broad-based growth across all sub-sectors.
